1st Brookmans Park Scout Group
Annual Report 1999-2000

At present, my main concern is our Beaver colony which may have to close if I do not find a regular leader. Please keep supporting our activities and any offers of help would be welcome.

At the beginning of May our Fathers and Sons camp was held at "Tolmers" in Cuffley.

The weekend activities included raft building, climbing, archery, rifle shooting, and an alien-themed wide game and other sporting games. The fathers and sons also cooked a meal over an open fire and some 90 people were entertained to lunch at the end of the camp.

Beavers

Unfortunately our beaver leader has had to give up and, although one of our cub leaders took over last term, she is unable to continue.

We have 24 youngsters who meet for one hour a week but we desperately need a leader to organise their activities and with the assistance of the parents who have offered to help occasionally, run the meetings.

Although the beavers have had regular weekly meetings, we have been unable to organise any outings recently.

Cubs

The two cub packs held most of their meetings at Gobions this summer. Some members of the pack visited Seaworld at Southend and travelled to the end of the pier.

Their camp this year was held at Deal in Kent and offered our youngsters new experiences including abseiling, rifle shooting, a cliff walk, a swim in the sea and an assault course.

This plus the usual games and cooking some of their own food meant we all had a good time.

The cubs also competed in a Hatfield District five-a-side football tournament, unfortunately they did not reach the finals.

A sixer and seconder sleep over was also held which included a video and our own indoor water gun quasar.

Scouts

The scouts have also had many of their summer meetings outdoors and held a survival camp in July at which they built a shelter to sleep under and cooked a meal without using utensils.

For the first time for a number of years we held a Summer Camp - only five days long but after a day at Alton Towers, rock climbing, canoeing in Canadian Canoes and a day of cycling on cycle tracks and minor roads they came home exhausted but having thoroughly enjoyed their experiences.

Fund Raising

At Brookmans Park Village Day, our group executive, assisted by some parents, ran our Tombola.

Thank you to all those residents who donated prizes for this, almost a complete sellout. Thank you also to those of you who donated jumble for our annual Jumble Sale.

Our American Square Dance is again being arranged and will be on Saturday January 13th. Pete Skiffens is the caller and tickets should be available from Andrew Day (Tel: 654605) soon.

Ian Lewington,
Group Scout Leader
