1st Brookmans Park Scout Group
Annual Report 1997-1998

At Phasels Wood Scout campsite over May Day weekend last year, you would have seen 2,000 Scouts including members of our own troop enjoying themselves with such activities as laser clay pigeon shooting, Go karting, fairground rides, live bands and disco music. In addition to this, there were the more traditional canoeing, climbing and survival activities that scouts normally take part in.

A week later, at the same site it would have been hard to find evidence of the previous week's activities. We were there again, this time with 40 fathers and sons from our group enjoying the annual camp. Their weekend included pot holing, climbing, archery, rifle shooting and a go on the site's Cresta Run. They also cooked a meal over an open fire and using the propane gas stoves which we now use, some 70 people including wives and other children were entertained to lunch at the end of the camp.

Cubs

Cub camp this year was held at Deal in Kent. Overlooking the white cliffs, the camp offered our youngsters new experiences including grass sledging, abseiling, orienteering and an activity and fitness trail. This plus the usual games of football, rounders and swimming in the sea. The scouts also held a traditional weekend camp and a weekend Canoeing Camp. They gained entry to the Regional Cooking Competition and finished 4th.

Village Day

Village Day last year - do you remember how it rained! Our somewhat depleted races were won this year by the cubs. Our group executive, assisted by some parents, ran our Tombola stall raising more than £300 for group funds.

Jumble Sale

Another successful day and after a week of hard work by members of the group and parents more than £1000 was collected for group funds.

Our American Square Dance in January - this was again very successful although not quite a sell out, and some £750 was made for group funds.

Beaver Colony

We have been able to reopen our Beaver Scout Colony and welcome Carol Robb and Jane Tilbury to our leadership team.

We now have some 20 Beaver Scouts aged 6-8 enjoying fun and friendship activities at their weekly meetings, regretfully our Venture Unit is now closed. Our two Cub Scout packs and the Scout Troop continue to flourish.

Regretfully, we learnt of the death of David Hughes, a former cub leader just before Christmas.

The annual report would not be complete without thanking all the leaders, helpers and members of the group executive for all their hard work during the year, without which the group would quickly come to a halt. Thank you.
