Local Country Walks These short walks are all based around local pubs and are about three to four miles long and fairly easy. Allow two hours for most. Click on the walk number or 'walk details' for point by point instructions and 'walk symbols' for a key to the maps. If you would like to comment on any of the walks for the benefit of others, please use the forum discussion thread on the walks. Walk 1 - North Mymms Church North Mymms Church - Potwells - Water End - North Mymms Church A hill climb, an old coaching road, and a secluded valley - 4.5 km (3 miles) This walk runs south along the old coaching road that was once the main route between North Mymms and South Mimms. After a short climb along a bridleway through woodland, the way opens up with views across a rural valley surrounded by rolling wooded hills. The route includes footpaths edged by hedgerows rich in wild flowers. There's an option for refreshments at two pubs, the Woodman, The Old Maypole, or the Water End Cafe. walk details Walk 2 - Camfield Place Wild Hill - Camfield Place - Harefield Wood - Wild Hill Woodland, footbridges, Barbara Cartland and real ale - 5 km (3.2 miles) This short walk circles Camfield Place, the country estate of the late Barbara Cartland. It starts and ends at the Woodman pub in Wild Hill and takes you through five woods, down tree-lined footpaths, across a footbridge, and down quiet country lanes. At one spot, when you are on top of the hill in Harefield Wood, there is a across the valley to Camfield Place. The journey ends with the option of a pint at the Woodman at Wild Hill. walk details Walk 3 - Brookmans Park Brookmans Park - Water End - Brookmans Park Meadows, woodland, and swallow holes - 5 km (3.2 miles) A great walk for those who want to enjoy an attractive ramble with a choice of two pubs and without having to rely on the car (if you live in Brookmans Park that is). If you like animals, there is the added bonus of going along a path that skirts the grounds of the Royal Veterinary College where you might meet frisky, but friendly, horses. You pass the North Mymms swallow holes, which are the nearest Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) to Brookmans Park. walk details Walk 4 - Epping Green Little Berkhamsted - Epping Green - Little Berkhamsted Two pubs, two woods and excellent views - 4 km (2.5 miles) This is a gentle stroll through undulating countryside and twisting woodland paths between Little Berkhamsted and Epping Green. It includes a shaded dell and a path through a small secluded valley. One part of the walk, towards the end, can be a bit muddy after rain, so take boots. The walk has the advantage of starting near a pub and has a pub halfway round. The last part has spectacular views across to Brookmans Park, Wild Hill, and Essendon. walk details Walk 5 - River Lea West End - River Lea - West End Rolling hills, open vistas and a secluded pub - 4.5 km (3 miles) A fairly stretching walk down from West End through bridleways and country lanes to the banks of the River Lea and back up the hill again to West End. It offers marvellous open views north across the Hertfordshire countryside and has the benefit of beginning and ending at the Candlestick pub. The part along the river can be muddy after rain but the going is good for most of the route. There is a small amount of lane walking along a quiet access lane to Hatfield Park. walk details Walk 6 - Wild Hill Wild Hill - Grubbs Lane - Woodside - Wild Hill Sheltered wooded bridleways and open fields - 4.5 km (3 miles) This walk has a fair amount of up and down and is a pleasant mix of fields and bridleways. It starts across fields used for grazing horses and which can be muddy. The route includes a stretch along a wooded bridleway overlooking rolling hills with good views south. This bridleway is well worth the effort on its own. The walk has a short stretch of lane walking towards the end, but the lane is quiet. The walk has the benefit of beginning and ending at the Woodman pub. walk details Walk 7 - Little Berkhamsted Little Berkhamsted - Bedwellpark Farm - Ashfield Farm - Little Berkhamsted A hill walk and an 'environmentally sensitive' area - 4 km (2.5 miles) or 5.5 km (3.5m) This is an excellent walk which includes a spectacular stretch of bridleway, a sandy path edged in gorse, and rich woodland. Don't be put off by the golf course and quarry, you are soon past them. A quiet lane leads to a 'Conservation Walks Area' where you are free to roam over an open field which is a, 'Environmentally Sensitive Areas', with views of the surrounding countryside. You follow a picturesque path with oak trees that must be hundreds of years old. walk details Walk 8 - Tylers Causeway Newgate Street - Tylers Causeway - Ponsbourne Park - Newgate Street Open fields, enclosed bridleways and rhododendrons - 4.25 km (2.75 miles) This circular walk around the west, north, and east side of Newgate Street, takes in lanes, footpaths, and a bridleway through woodland rich in rhododendron. It begins down a quiet lane, before heading across a valley with views to the west towards Brookmans Park. There is a fair amount of up and down, but nothing too strenuous. Much of the way is through deep woodland. It ends with the choice of two pubs. There is a small amount of lane walking. walk details Walk 9 - Howe Green Essendon - Howe Green - Essendon A steady drop, a steep climb and a hidden hamlet - 5.5 km (3.2 miles) This walk is rich in variety with a good downhill stretch for striding out, a steady climb back up to Essendon and, halfway round, the quiet hamlet of Howe Green. You cross the golf course twice and pass a quarry, but don't be put off, the views are spectacular, and the flora, particularly near the quarry, is rich. Towards the end, the route skirts the north and west side of Essendon, via a path that weaves its way around the village and returns past the cricket field. walk details Walk 10 - The Brookmans Park Round Brookmans Park - Bell Bar - Welham Green - Brookmans Park A walk around Brookmans Park - 8.25 km (5 miles) This walk might seem familiar to many, but it is suprising how different Brookmans Park looks when you circle the village by paths and lanes. There is a fair amount of lane walking, although most are quiet. There are footpaths too, one with good views to the north-east of the village. Two of the paths can be muddy including the one that leaves Hawkshead Lane and travels north alongside the railway and the one between Bell Bar and Welham Green. The route takes you through Gobions Wood. walk details Walk 11 - Camfield Place West End - Camfield Place - Little Berkhamsted - Essendon - West End Rolling hills, footbridges, kingfishers, and herons - 6.5 km (4 miles) This undulating walk along footpaths, byways, and country lanes, starts and finishes at a pub and has a pub and shops at the halfway point (via a short detour). The route takes the walker through woodland and alongside streams. Two small areas can be muddy, and there are some nettles at one point along the way, so strong shoes and long trousers would be best. There is a fair amount of up and down. A stick might be useful for those who struggle with gradients. walk details Walk 12 - The North Mymms Quiz Walk Brookmans Park - Water End - Welham Green - Brookmans Park The North Mymms Quiz Walk, a circular walk from Brookmans Park Station - 4.5 km (2.8 miles) This walk was written up under the Parish Environmental Action Plan (PEAP) by a team of volunteers working with the Countryside Commission and Herts Co Co. Brochures with a map and directions were posted through every door in North Mymms during the summer of 2005. Click here to read a report about a guided walk along the route which took place on November 5, 2005. Click here for the map and directions. Walk 13 - The Candlestick Round West End - Lea Valley - Essendon - West End
A pleasant undulating four mile walk from West End down to the Lea Valley and back up via Essendon village. Great views, quite a lot of ups and downs, but well worth it. Start and finish at The Candlestick. Walk 14 - The Woodman Round Wild Hill - Grubbs Lane - Camfield Place - Wild Hill
A good walk from the car park at The Woodman, Wild Hill, through farmland, woodland and back to the pub. The route goes along The Hertfordshire Way at one point and cuts through Camfield Place. Note: This is a collection of short walks all based around local pubs. All are in the region of three to four miles long and are fairly easy if you are able to cross step stiles, negotiate bachelor gates, traverse the occasional muddy path, and manage small hills. Boots and wet weather gear, a bottle of water, a snack, and the correct map for the area are recommended. Ordnance Survey Explorer E182 map for St Albans & Hatfield covers this area. The maps on this site are only sketches. The Brookmans Park Newsletter can take no responsibility for paths that have been fenced off or closed since this series of walks was published. Some signs, stiles, and gates might also have been damaged or hidden since these walks were published. Feedback is always welcome. If you have any comments, please e-mail this site, or, if you would like to comment on any of the walks for the benefit of others, please use the forum discussion thread on the walks. As with all these walks, please do check the pub opening hours before setting off to make sure you are not left disappointed.
