New station shelter vandalised Three days after it was built, the new passenger shelter at Brookmans Park Station has been vandalised. The attack, which happened during the day on Wednesday, December 1st, left the platform strewn with glass. The shelter was erected at the weekend by Railtrack as part of its renovation programme for the station. Railtrack had responded to complaints from commuters, expressed on this site, who have had to stand in the open without protection from the wind and rain for more than four years. Renovation programme The area manager, Phil Heath, inspected the station in November prior to a meeting with the North Mymms Residents Association at which he outlined the renovation plans. The new shelter was the first phase in that project.
Railtrack had intended to put Perspex sheeting in the new shelter but it appears glass was used instead. Mr Heath has been notified about the damage and is investigating as a matter of urgency. It is hoped the glass can be replaced with the Perspex in the near future. Railtrack had hoped that CCTV cameras could be installed at the same time as the new shelter was erected, in an effort to deter the vandals, but the cameras have yet to be put in place. The shelter was the first of three planned for the station with another to be built on the London-bound platform and one on the Welwyn-bound platform in January 2000. The platforms at the station were also due to be resurfaced with block paving and new drainage.
