Hertfordshire is setting up community websites to act as an archive of historical memories of the area.

The project is being led by the Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies (HALS), supported by a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of almost £50k.

Hertfordshire County Council says volunteers are needed to join community archive groups and create their own websites. The aim is that local residents will submit memories and photographs to record and preserve the county’s history.

According to the council, "this is a great opportunity to learn new skills and no previous experience is needed."

Two events are being staged so that people can offer images to be scanned and uploaded. People are also invited to submit their memories to the new community archives website.

The events will be held at Welwyn Garden City Library on Monday 11 May from 2pm to 4pm and at the Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies offices in Hertfordshire County Hall, Pegs Lane, Hertford, SG13 8EJ on Friday 15 May between 11am and 1pm.
