Top season for local chess champs
Report by
Little Heath and Brookmans Park Chess Club has just finished its fourth competitive season enjoying considerable success.
The first team, led by Mark Topham, won Herts League Division 4 by a comfortable margin, following up on three successive divisional championships. In its first season, the second team, under club organiser Chris Cook, has achieved second place in Division 6, guaranteeing promotion. The Herts Under 100 knockout trophy was won by a team captained by Yvette Cook (14), a pupil at Chancellor's. The team comprised one adult, Michael Chesworth, and three juniors Michael Turner (13), Daniel Fernandez (8) and Yvette. During the season, the club has involved several juniors in the third team including players from Brookmans Park, St Giles and Chancellor's schools. This provided invaluable playing opportunities for the youngsters against adult competition and introducing them to a different style of play. The club also reached the semi-final of the Sharp Trophy (Under 140). Several juniors from the club have qualified for the UK Chess Challenge Gigafinal, which is being held in Manchester. During the summer, the club aims to raise its profile at local events before starting the new season with yet another new team. This is especially notable at a time when other clubs are struggling. The club meets at Little Heath Parish Hall on Wednesday evenings and Brookmans Park URC on Thursday evenings. As well as providing weekly coaching sessions, the club organises junior and adult tournaments. Further details about the club and its activities can be found on Little Heath and Brookmans Park Chess Club's website or by contacting Chris Cook on 01707-642027. You can discuss chess issues in this site's forum. Report by
