Council handed second greenbelt petition

Some residents had to evacuate their homes in October 2000

A petition containing more than 500 names opposing development of local greenbelt land has been handed to Welwyn Hatfield Council.

A month ago a 350-name petition was presented to the planning department as part of a campaign being run by the North Mymms District Green Belt Society (NMDGBS).

The society is concerned about plans for three areas of green belt land near Welham Green which are being considered for possible development as part of the Welwyn Hatfield District plan review. They include:

52 acres of land at Marshmoor (the land between the railway line and the A1000, north of Dixons Hill Road)
10 acres of land known as Skimpans Farm Meadows (between the railway line and Station Road, south of Bulls Lane)
2.2 acres of land at the end of Welham Manor, off Dixons Hill Road.

The Society has held two public meetings in May and June. Almost 200 residents attended the first meeting and more than 100 attended the follow-up.

Two Newsletters have also been circulated. The first brought in almost 400 replies and the second more than 525 responses.

According to the NMDGBS all the latest responses were in support of the society’s stance.

The planning inspector, Michael Clark, will now consider all the evidence and will report back to Welwyn Hatfield Council in March 2004 with his recommendations.
