New damage to Hawkshead bridge
Three months after cracks in Hawkshead Lane bridge were repaired, four new large cracks, two on each side, have appeared. The north side of the bridge parapet is also breaking away from the road again and there is damage to the brickwork and traces of paint at both corners of the bridge where traffic turns to cross it. For more detailed pictures of the damage click here. The bridge was closed for two weeks in March while the earlier damage was repaired.
The cracks have appeared in different places to the earlier ones with two involving the new brickwork. Unlike the previous cracks these do not always follow the line of the mortar but break diagonally through the bricks themselves. The bridge has a three-ton weight limit sign although the highways department says it is strong enough to stand 40 tons. Bob Horrocks, honorary secretary of the North Mymms District Green Belt has written a letter outlining details of the latest damage to the Bridges and Contracts Unit at Hertfordshire County Council, department which organised the previous repairs to the bridge.
