Snow closes local schools
Chancellor's, Brookmans Park, Little Heath, Dame Alice Owen's and Lochinver schools are closed today because of snow. A blanket of snow, 5cm (2in) deep in places has covered south Hertfordshire overnight and the snow is still falling with the Met Office warning of more snow to come. The local authority has been gritting all night and warn that driving will be difficult. Motorists are being urged not to travel unless their journey is essential. On the railways, de-icing units will be spraying anti-freeze on the tracks to stop the points freezing. This from First Capital Connect We are operating a full service today, but customers should allow extra time for their journey. Please take extra care on the station platforms and when getting on and off the trains, as it may be slippery Customers should be prepared for some minor disruption to all services today due to snow fall. There are some weather related points failures this morning. Customers are advised to allow more time for their journey. First Capital Connect, last night, ran empty trains throughout the night to stop rails and power lines from freezing over, treating train doors and other equipment to ensure they did not freeze over. At stations, each station was provided with ice thawing granules laid along the platforms and extra staff have been mobilised to clear station platforms. Special announcements have been prepared for stations and trains this morning to warn customers of the potential disruption. Customers are advised to check back here at frequent intervals for up to date information, or to contact www.nationalrail.co.uk You can discuss the snow in a discussion thread running in this site's forum.
