Council replies to pothole concerns Hertfordshire County Council has responded to concerns, expressed on this site, about the state of local roads and whether car owners can claim compensation for damage to their vehicles. It followed the publication of a number of comments in the Have Your Say section of this site.
The following is the text from an e-mail sent to this site.
The majority of roads in Brookmans Park are currently managed for the
County Council by Welwyn Hatfield District Council. They are responsible
for the maintenance of all public highways in the area with the exception
of the A1000.
Any claims for compensation, other than for the A1000 should
be directed to the District Council but we cannot comment on whether they
would be settled or not.
The County Council is developing a programme of repair work across the County for next financial year (April 2001 to March 2002) it is not possible to say, at this moment, if roads in Brookmans Park will be included. The repair programme is being based on road condition.
The exceptional weather this winter has put immense strain on the highway
network. Pot holes can appear very quickly and it would be unreasonable to
expect an immediate response to all the problems on the network.
For roads
we directly maintain, the County Council is doing all it can to respond to
publicly reported dangerous potholes within 24 hours. All drivers should be
aware of the potential problems and should drive at a speed that reflects
the current conditions.
As suggested above, initial contact about most roads in your area should be
with Welwyn Hatfield District Council, or the usual phone or
written contacts. Hope this is of some help.
