Annual Charity Swim - April 1, 2000

The Rotary Club of Brookmans Park will be holding its 8th Annual Charity Swim, at Potters Bar Furzefield Centre, on Saturday 1st April.

This event has been held regularly over the last seven years and has raised in excess of £25,000 for local, national and international charities. Organisations which have directly benefited from this event have included Riding for the Disabled, Lakeside School, Potter Bar Life Saving Club, Motivation (an international charity which sets up self sustaining projects in developing countries to produce low cost wheel chairs and provide rehabilitation services) and many others.

The charities that will benefit from this year’s event will be Hope and Homes for Children, Motivation and various local Rotary Charities/ Community Organisations.

The swim is organised to allow teams of five swimmers to swim as many lengths as possible in twenty minutes and obtain sponsorship for each length swum. The maximum number of lengths swum in one session, so far, is 53 by the Potters Bar Swimming Club’s boy’s team, several years ago. Teams comprise of friends, youth organisations, schools, relatives and families, clubs, societies and businesses. Many teams have been involved in this fun event since its inception 8 years ago and have raised thousands of pounds for good causes.

Barn Dance - June 3, 2000

The Rotary Club of Brookmans Park will be holding a Barn Dance and Hog Roast at Cross-Oaks Farm, Ridge, Nr. Shenley on Saturday 3rd June 2000. This event has been held regularly over the last 8 years and has raised much-needed funds for many local, worthy causes.

Unlike many other Barn Dances this event actually takes place in a barn, which has been modified to accommodate such functions. Dancing will be to Charles Day and the Red River Band who regularly attend this event and will do their best to get you running around in circles.

Much needed refreshment will be provided by a licensed bar, run by the Rotary Club. Food will come in the form of a pig roasted over a spit for up to 12 hours, preparations for cooking often start at six o’clock in the morning. Burgers and sausages are freshly made and provided by a local butcher. The barn and the food are both under cover so even if this summer weather is unpredictable, people should be protected from the elements.

Organiser, Rotarian Vicki Reynolds, said ‘this is a marvellous event, at which young and old get together and have loads of fun and burn off masses of energy, it also helps local Rotary Charities so every one goes away happy’

Bowlerthon - June 3, 2000

On Saturday 3rd June, The Rotary Club of Brookmans Park will be holding its inaugural Bowlerthon at Lloyds Lanes, Enfield.

The Rotary Club has had its own ten pin-bowling league for the last couple of years; called the Brookmans Park Turkeys (a ‘Turkey’ in ten-pin bowling is three strikes in a row). It was thought to be a good idea to include our enjoyment of the game with the possibility of a fund raising event and Lloyds Lanes in Enfield have made this a reality by providing help, advice, assistance and sponsorship for this evening.

At present the intention is to ask people to form teams of four people, be it friends, family, colleagues or whatever and ask them to pay for and play two games. There will be prizes and awards for different categories but the details are yet to be finalised.
