I've entered the site in the 'community and information' category of the New Statesman New Media Awards. In previous years the Brookmans Park Newsletter has won the award once and been commended twice. If you want to add a nomination for the site, or any other site, simply click here and fill in the form.

Done Dave,
One thing I have nominated BPN, someone has nominated you personally?
Now come on you lot if I can do it from the wilds of a heathen country then there is no excuse for locals not voting for the best website there is ( mines a pint Dave )
regards,

The Brookmans Park Newsletter has again been shortlisted for the New Statesman New Media Awards, this year for the 'Community and Information' category. Click here for the shortlist.

Thanks to those who took the trouble to nominate the site. The Brookmans Park Newsletter has won the Overall Merit Award once and been runner up twice in previous years.

The winners of this year's awards will be announced at an award ceremony in central London on 5 July. Ian Watmore, Head of UK e-Government and Government CIO, will present the trophies to the winners and make this year's keynote speech.

Would any forum members or site users like to represent the Brookmans Park Newsletter at the New Statesman New Media Awards 2005?

The presentation ceremony is to be held at Fabric, 77a Charterhouse Street, London EC1M 3HN on Tuesday 5 July (7pm for 7.30pm). It’s near Farringdon station. The event usually starts with drinks and snacks (last year it was fantastic wine and Chinese finger food) and the presentation ceremony is usually over in less than an hour.

I have an official invitation which can be used by anyone who has supported the site by using the forum, submitting content, or by simply being a regular visitor.

The RSVP date is Friday 1 July, so we need to know soon if anybody would like to attend.

If we are successful in the ‘Community and Information’ category you would need to go up and receive the award. In previous years there have not been any speeches, so no worries on that count. The usual dress code is smart casual. You might get your photo taken for the local press and for use on the New Statesman site.

If anyone is interested could you please post here and also send me a message through the site feedback form. Click here to access the form.

Thanks

David

One of the regular users of the site and forum has volunteered to attend the New Statesman New Media Awards 2005 on behalf of the site. Thanks very much for that. Fingers crossed it won't be a wasted journey.

Not just drum and base, but yes it's mainly urban dance, however I don't think that it will be of concern on a Tuesday night. Good luck and have a great night.

If you've ever been there you'll notice people smoking weed freely on the stairs that lead down into the rooms - crazy!!!!

I have been there many times, and yes there are people using drugs freely, however since the event is on a Tuesday, I'm guessing that they will not have to contend with that.

Thanks for collecting the award John. Well done everyone. Anyone can build a website, it's the content that matters and the whole community is responsible for providing that.

Now, a question. Where should the trophy go?  Suggestions below please. I will start the ball rolling. How about seeing if the Brookmans Park Library would put it on display?

Congratulations. Ever since I have discovered this site, I have been impressed by its quality, which is way beyond what I would have expected. Obviously, the New Statesman thinks the same. Can we now expect to find a big increase in subscriptions to that worthy and intelligent magazine in BP now, do you think?

I won't hold my breath!

The lbrary would seem to be a good place for the award to be displayed.  In 2004 Brookman Park won the Calor Village of the Year ICT category for the East England region, and £500.  The Internet facilities at the library was a contributing factor.  As far as I can tell, the national winner, Bembridge on the Isle of Wight, ony won by a small margin.

That prize money was split £100 to this website to pay for the web hosting and the remaining £400 went to the library to improve the IT facilities.  Therefore the New Statesman award on display at the library would be very apt.

So, well done Dave, James, and not forgetting Bernard, the third member of the team.

Thanks Bob, do you have any contacts at Herts County who might be able to make this happen?

By the way, just received an email congratulating the site from our community police officer.

Can anyone suggest any improvements to the site, particularly in terms of functionality, so that we can make it of more value to the community over the next year? It would be nice to win the New Statesman Award for a third time in 2006. All suggestions welcome.

Should we enter the site for the New Statesman New Media Awards again? Nominations are being invited for the 2006 awards.

For those who are new to the site, the Brookmans Park Newsletter has won this national award twice and been commended twice. Click here to read about the winning of the award in 2005.

Details of the categories for the 2006 awards can be read by clicking here. If we do enter, I suppose we would be best placed to be nominated for the information award category (which I presume is the independent information award category in the drop down menu on the nomination page).

Information award
This award will go to the individual or organisation that best uses new media technology to provide an alternative, informative voice enhancing democratic debate.

If anyone does feel inclined to nominate the site, you can click here for the nomination form.

If you do, please nominate 'The Brookmans Park Newsletter' and not individuals connected with the site - it's a team effort and a massive part of that effort are all the contributions made to this forum and the content contributed by local community groups.

Thanks

 ;)
