Empty Bank Accounts
« on: May 24, 2007, 01:32:15 pm »
I am now aware of five people who have had their bank accounts cleaned out via cash points in Melbourne, Australia. I think I know the common link as to a particular local cash point which may be reading cards and PINs - am I permitted to post here? Alternatively can someone give me a number to call?

surely it won't hurt to suggest which cashpoint it is .. even if it does not turn out to be true .. at least we could avoid using it just in case ?

Please don't post it here, although you could IM people the details on request (yes I'd like them too)

I recommend CardWatch, which is the UK banking industry's body which works with police, retailers and organisations including Crimestoppers on card fraud.

Website: www.cardwatch.org.uk
Tel: 020 7711 6356
Email: cardwatch@apacs.org.uk

Another good one is Association for Payment Clearing Services (APACS), the UK trade association of banks and building societies it also investigates cashpoint fraud.

I had phone call from Bank yesterday to say someone had attempted to take out several thousand pounds from my account in Australia but luckily it had been denied.  Please IM me with details so I can avoid.  I rarely use my cashpoint card but know it has been used locally by me recently.  Thanks

Thanks for the info Gashead, luckily it's one I've never used, I only use the two in the village.

Got to keep a lookout all the time these days   >:(

Received this rather dis-spiriting reply today:

I am afraid that Card Watch can merely provide general information, we do not offer any investigation or law enforcement services.

For details of which police station to report to, visit http://www.police.uk. Wheather or not the police would be able to investigate would be dependent on their time and resources.

If you have any specific questions regarding card fraud, or feel that our publications may help you then please do let us know.

If anyone else woukd like details of the machine in question please continue to IM. I will not be ignoring you but I am doing this from work as I am not on line at home.

Have been advised it is OK to report publicly that it is not one of the two in the village.

Just got a report that another local ATM might have been tampered with. Again it's not the ones in the village. Take a good look at any cash point you use and if it looks in anyway different move to another one.

This issue has been highlighted in the lastest neighbourhood watch newsletter. Apparently, there have been 15 attempts to withdraw cash from accounts in recent months.  Click here for more details.
