Local teenager sets record

Boy sails into the record books

A British 14-year-old has arrived in Antigua to become the youngest person to sail the Atlantic single-handed. Michael Perham, from Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, arrived at the Caribbean island at 1400 GMT.

I know the holidays can seem long, but I think packing them off to their grandparents would be cheaper and safer :)

He is a pupil at Chancellor's School.  I only hope the school gave him leave of absence.   ;)

A remarkable achievement for such a young person. Hopefully he will be an inspiration to others his age to go out and achieve things

The Headmaster at Chancellor's was on Radio 5 yesterday evening, and yes, special leave had been granted.

I really do worry about my sanity when this type of red tape came into to my mind - as well as thinking that there is no way I could ever have done such a great feat.  Just shows what sort of weird world we live in when red tape engulfs our thoughts like this.  Too worried about breaking rules instead of just getting on wiith life   ::)

I thought it was wonderful that the BBC on Wednesday evening made this story its headline article on the 6 O'Clock Bulletin. Whilst many may have had concern that there were far more 'serious' world issues and that maybe it shouldn't have had such a high profile, for once I think it was great that such a good news story about a young person was headline news. Young people making headlines for the right reasons for a change. It was great to see and hopefully it will encourage lots of others too. I too extend my congratulations! It was also great to see footage of Chancellors School in the report.

Thought I'd let you know this story made the front page of the sports section of The Herald here in Auckland, New Zealand.  We are a big sporting nation and celebrate all goods sports successes.  Brookmans Park and Chancellors both got a mention in the article which was accompanied by a nice photo of Michael

Michael Perham will be giving a talk about his adventures at Southgate Methodist Church on Thursday 8th December. Tickets cost 5 with proceeds going to The Tall Ship Youth Trust.

If his talk is half a interesting as the programme it will be well worth hearing.
