Title: What happened to the Brookmans Park URC Wives Group?
Post by: Editor on October 21, 2017, 09:09:03 am
What happened to the Brookmans Park United Reformed Church (https://brookmansparkurc.wordpress.com) (URC) Wives Group? Pictures from local historian, archivist and photographer, Mike Allen's Images of North Mymms (http://www.brookmans.com/history/images_of_north_mymms.shtml).

I don't know the answer to your question but I would have thought the second picture was much later than 1953!  Probably more like the 70s
(I recognise at least one person in it!)

I agree. Perhaps someone at the URC can date the second picture for us?

I recognise a few ladies who are still active in the church today, albeit in their 80's now. I would say it's definitely the 70's ....

I was talking to one of the ladies in the front row in the CoOp the other day, she is still very much alive - so can't be the 50's.  ;D Another was a 'Dinner Lady' at Brookmans Park Primary School in the 1960's and was on playground duty each lunch time. Sadly, she did pass away a while ago, but I have fond memories of her and her care for me and my fellow pupils.

I have a feeling that they were known as 'Young wives' - even when the ladies were in their 70s and 80s!!
Perhaps Mermaid would know.
They used to organise a bi-annual coach outing, alternating and combining with the W.I.

Hi

Having known three of the ladies in the photo , I contacted the surviving one and she said it was 1977.

Thanks Wendy, that sounds about right. David
