Title: Black young rabbit - pet or wild
Post by: Colin_H on August 19, 2017, 11:52:30 am
Hi,

A young black rabbit was sitting munching on fallen apples in my garden today.

It didn't seem that nervous when approached.

Is there a way to identify if it's a pet or wild?

Thanks

There have been wild melanistic rabbits around the village for some years. I used to see them quite often on the railway embankment.

Thanks for the reply. We actually called the RSPCA for advice and they were quite adamant it wasn't wild from my description and advised we try to catch it. We did and now it's in a hutch munching apples but I'm starting to think that maybe they are wrong.  I hate to think we have captured a wild rabbit.

I have seen black rabbits in the vicinity of Bradmore Lane for 30 years and I spoke recently with a 92 year old resident of Welham Green who recollected seeing them as a boy!!
