Title: Local rain, flooding, ice and fog warnings
Post by: Editor on February 01, 2014, 11:05:07 am
Be careful driving along Hawkshead Lane this morning. Bottom part west of Vet College closed. Deep water near Folly Arch. Also A1(M) closed because of flooding by M25 junction.

The road was flooded by the catholic church this morning but managed to get through - although some other cars were abandoned.

With more rain overnight and tomorrow I can't see things improving much for a while.

Station road now closed after doctors' surgery. The local fire engine currently pumping out water. You will need at least a 4x4 to get past and preferably as small boat.

The picture was taken after the engine left. I think they gave up.

After an aborted attempt to go down Station Road this morning.... the poor owners of the house where the flooding is were trying to get people NOT to drive through - the "wash" was flooding their land/property. It was very deep then (well past door sills on my CRV, even though I chose to turn round and crawl along the A1000)

Fortunately I missed all that, but up in wild hill it was quite bad at lunchtime. There was a lot of debris on the road and a river running off one field across the road and into another.

I was not put off mind, and "battled" through to get my fishfinger sandwich at The Candlestick (mods:other pubs are available :)

drive safe all

Brilliant - I will never be able to take a yellow weather warning seriously again.

Just in case you are planning and heading down the A1 (M), an update on flooding via Twitter.

The gritters will be out tonight because of a risk of freezing after flooding.

Screen grab from the Environment Agency site (http://apps.environment-agency.gov.uk/flood/142151.aspx) showing where flooding is expected. The maps on the site are updated every 15mins (not this grab). Put your postcode in the box on the page if you want to know the latest situation. (Note: Although the image below is a screen grab, the copyright still belongs to the Environment Agency and the grab must not be used without the agency's permission. This site has requested permission to include this grab.)

Driving home a while ago, Warrengate Road had been closed off to traffic from Swanland Road and Station Road is flooded in the usual spot near the Catholic Church.  A car tried to drive through and got stuck!  Finally drove into village via GWR, although some surface water on the A1000.  Be careful out there!

Interesting site for checking water levels in local rivers. Just enter your postcode on GaugeMap (http://www.gaugemap.co.uk). Two widgets from the site embedded below and screen grabs of North Mymms and Mymmshall Brook. The widgets show the water levels rising and falling. Clever idea.

I know it wouldn't solve the problem, but if the drains along Station Road were unblocked, it might help a bit.

Hi all,

I have been doing a bit of splitting and merging threads to try to keep all similar topics together. Epiphany raised an excellent point in this thread which a couple of us responded to.

Once again flooding is a local issue, makes you wonder what it will be like if large swathes of the surrounding Green Belt are built on.

It was clear that discussion and subsequent responses could result in the flooding thread becoming a housing, green belt, development thread. So I have moved the posts over to the BPRA thread about the forthcoming meeting on the WHC local plan and proposed housing development (http://www.brookmans.com/forum/index.php/topic,4816.msg36929.html#msg36929).

On Friday, after the BRPR public meeting, I will merge that thread with existing threads on green belt and housing so that all the local discussions on the issue are in one place.

David

After the rain and flood warnings comes a Met Office National Severe Weather Warning (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/#?WT.mc_id=Twitter_Warnings_Fog&tab=map&map=Warnings&zoom=5&lon=-3.50&lat=55.50&fcTime=1416787200) for fog in the area.

You might need to take extra care when driving along Station Road between Brookmans Park and Potterells Medical Centre because of water streaming across the road. It isn't deep, but some are driving fairly fast and seem impatient if you slow down to negotiate the water carefully. There is flooding down Bulls Lane.

Local water levels below. The widgets below are dynamic, showing the current water levels. Below them are screen grabs from the site.

Avoid Station Road at the moment because the flooding is bad between Potterells and Welham Green, particularly at that spot just before the  church known as watersplash.

Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad if HCC bothered to clean out the drains. I've reported it in the past and got a reply to the effect that it would be done when it came up in the schedules. Trouble is, the drains here collect all the silt washed down the hill from about the Memorial Hall. At the moment, silt in these drains is barely a couple of inches below the top of the grating.

I've moved five posts from this thread - which related to flood defences in Water End - over to the Local Plan thread (http://www.brookmans.com/forum/index.php/topic,92.msg40125.html#msg40125). No posts have been lost.
