So the rain at the weekend has washed a load of stones down to the bottom of Hawkshead Road and also made the potholes even worse.

Yet Herts Highways are still ignoring the problem.

Has anyone had any sort of reply from them yet?

It is now more than five months since this topic was opened and still no effort by Herts Highways to repair the road.

I know of five reports that have been made on their online system.

Any ideas on how we can focus their attention on repairing the road.   Perhaps we should all send in bills for tracking and new tyres.  That should do it.

It only takes someone to trip over there as there is no footway and they will defo be in for it.
Maybe we can find out who / what department covers civil claims for such things and write to them outlining the risks already highlighted and their liability.....

I've sent out couple of reminders to @HertsHighways via Twitter and copied in @whtimes.

Contact the county councillor Mark Mills-Bishop, Mark.Mills-Bishop@hertfordshire.gov.uk

He is usually quite responsive.

The potholes are getting worse on an almost daily basis It's now got to the stage where I have to drive along the bottom section of Hawkshead in 1st gear at 5mph, any faster would damage my car.

That looks bad, but I think Holloways Lane (Welham Green) is worse - and probably affects quite a few of BP residents as it's a short cut north for some areas of BP.

Wait till they start building new Houses, then the roads will be 10 times worst than they are now. Unless new roads are going to be built.

Followed a motor cycle courier down Hawkshead this morning who was probably unfamiliar with the area, his front wheel slipped into one of the potholes forcing him to change course and nearly into the hedgerow. Those responsible at highways for the road surface should hang their heads in shame.

If this was in the private sector the HSE would be prosecute those responsible.

There is a notice at the bottom of the road stating it will be closed for 5 days starting 10/11/14.  I think they may be repairing / filling the potholes (hopefully a robust repair, although I'm not holding my breathe!)  ???

You were right not to hold your breathe Peeplins.   They have had the road closed for four days and no sign of repairing the farm track aka Hawkshead Road.

What exactly have they done in the days the road was closed? All the pot holes are as they were, and getting bigger every day, so nothing new there then.

Well, the same HCC committee is responsible for waste management. I understand existing landfill holes sites are in short supply.  >:D

They have had a cleaning truck sucking out the drains etc, nothing to do with potholes. I rode a bike up there a couple of day ago when road was shut at both ends. Traffic could have got passed though - it is only a conventional sized lorry after all - however they felt the need to close the road all day.

I called highways on Tuesday morning to ask if any repairs are scheduled and was told that I was the first to bring this to their attention!!!

I think the more calls they get on this the greater chance there is that some works will take place.

The individuals responsible for this dereliction of duty would last five minutes in the private sector.

To date I have successfully claimed for vehicle repairs due to pot hole damage on three occasions, the compensation received outstrips the cost of repairs to the road surface that caused the damage by some considerable margin.

I pointed this out to the legal department who paid the compensation at Hertford and was told "not our area of responsibility"

Having just checked HCC website, I note there are 2 recent reports submitted regarding the potholes.  Current status is they are ready for assessment, whatever that may mean.  I have just sent them an email, requesting an explanation why only the top half of the road was dressed last week and when they propose to repair rather than patch the bottom half of the road!

Let's see how long they take to reply!  Well according to their auto-response email, the SLA is 10 working days  ???

First they've heard about it!!!!

Well I have a reply, see below.  Needless to say I have suggested they undertake an urgent inspection and additionally requested details of their insurers.  Let's see how long it takes for a response

The surface dressing has been completed as per instruction. The section that you refer too was not down to be done, as this was surfaced dressed a few years ago. This is down on the forward programme to be resurface in around Two years time.

Regards,
------------------------------------------------------------

Hawkshead Lane was closed last week for road redressing with grit (work
ref FM072SD-CWY14891).  It would appear that they closed the road for 1
day only on Thurs 12 June and I like many other local residents are
extremely confused why only the top half from Potters Bar end to the RVC
was worked on.  The remainder of the road (bottom half past the RVC down
to the bridge at Warrengate Road was left untouched, when arguably this
was the section of road needing the most attention.  The hardship winter
weather has caused vast areas of the road to become, crazed and uneven
with many potholes throughout the length.  I am surprised that the only 2
report I can find are recent ones (ref 201006205260 &201006216378).  I am
amazed why a full survey of the road was not completed to assess the work
required on the whole road.  This appears to be such a waste of money. Can
you let me know when the bottom length of road I refer to will be repaired
properly.

Perhaps they need to be reminded how many times people have already complained!

Do you have a phone number you can share and we can all get onto it on Monday, assuming they don't work Saturday

I can't see how they can say they didn't know about the state of the road. I know of five reports made on their website and I reported it a few months ago.

My front tyres have worn badly and I had to replace both of them this morning and had to have the tracking done.

Does anyone know the process of claiming for them from the council.

This is not something I would normally do but they are choosing to ignore and neglect their obligations.

I have to say that making claims against Highways is not something I do at a drop of a hat, as of course this further compounds the problem, I just wish there was some correlation between revenues received and service provided from the authorities in and around Brookmans Park. It would also benefit the public purse if there was synergies between departments.

According to the WHTimes, Herts CC Highways 'locality budget' has set aside 90,000 for projects in both Welwyn Hatfield and Hertsmere.

Councillor Terry Douris, cabinet member for highways is quoted as saying "The highways locality budget scheme is allowing people in the Welwyn Hatfield area to influence important decisions on highways work. Residents who use local routes on a daily basis have a good knowledge of what problems need fixing and I hope people will get in touch with their county councillor and have their say on where funding is spent."

Just called HCC to report Hawkshead Lane, they've now had 8/9 complaints in the last week.  Apparently my complaint will be assessed within an SLA of 2 days and if they are able to fix there and then they will or else it will go on their schedule of works.  Would suggest others joining in and complaining.

HCC.  0300 123 4040 then option 3, option 2
