Check your soft drinks

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) says it is recommending that four soft drink products should be removed from sale because of their benzene levels. They tested 150 soft drinks. Apparently the levels in four were too high, according to the levels set by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The FSA says that, in some cases, people who have inhaled very high levels of benzene in the work place have been found to increase their risk of cancer.

The products are ...

  • Co-op - Low calorie bitter lemon
  • Popstar - Still sugar free lemon & lime drink
  • Morrisons - No added sugar pineapple & grapefruit crush
  • Hyberry - High juice no added sugar blackcurrant squash

Click here for the FSA report with exact batch numbers and sell by dates.

The FSA is quoted as saying that ...

"We found that levels in the vast majority of products tested were low and not a cause for concern. However we are concerned about the levels in four drinks and have asked their manufacturers to remove the affected batches from sale."

It's probably worth checking you don't have any in the cupboards.
