I posted some old pictures of Brookmans Park station in the Train update, news and information thread, but thought it best to move them to their own thread so that people can add their comments and memories.

A regular forum visitor sent me the following in an email.

"The railway station photos are interesting. I think both Don and Mary were employed there until the 1980s, but the really interesting photo is of "Ernie Wicks collecting ticket at barrier 1969". It shows how a very important aspect of travel from Brookmans Park has deteriorated in the last 30 years. Before then there was "step free access to the platforms". The "porter", eg Ernie or Don, would open the white paling gate (behind Ernie in the photo) and escort passengers across the tracks to the platforms, if needed because of heavy luggage, infirmity, or even a push-chair. A wooden walkway, raised to the height of the rails, made the pathway fairly smooth. No wonder the female passenger in the photo looks calm and contented. What is needed now is to get easy access to the platforms some other way. If the lines of the tracks were straightened and the platforms demolished and rebuilt on the outer side of the lines (as at Welham Green), step free access would be possible without the need for lifts."

I've managed to find two pictures in Mike Allen's collection showing the crossing.

Found another of the station crossing at Brookmans Park, this from when the station opened in 1926.

I remember as a small child watching the old footbridge being cut up with a gas axe - all the sparks seemed very exciting at the time

Most of the bridges along the line had to be rebuilt for electrification so that the overhead lines could run underneath

Was probably early 1970s

The station looks very smart and well-appointed compared with the present day.

Although I started using the station for daily travel to school in September 1963, I never knew the quaint platform lighting, connected using overhead wiring. Presumably live at 240v!

The shunter on the 'wrong end' of the ballast train evidently has an early experimental application of 'wasp stripes' on the nose end, which are inverted relative to the later standard, and applied in a shallower vee. It is probably a unique example, from which its identity could probably be deduced. The lads are undoubtedly Ron Kingdon's sons.

Mike Allen has just let me borrow volume 3 of his Images Of North Mymms, and it's got some really interesting pictures on it. Below are a few of Brookmans Park station showing it when it had a colourful garden near the ticket office, when there were brick shelters that didn't rattle when trains went past, when there was the old brick structure which was there when we moved here, and when there were trees on the platform. Please feel free to add comments.

I think the monochrome photo captions in the previous post could be more accurately dated as between 1967 and 1974. Yellow fronts on locomotives appeared here from 1967 (it was suggested that maybe they were hung by one end and the other dipped in a vat of yellow). In 1974, preparations for electrification began, the earliest moves being the replacement of overhead telegraph/telephone cables with bundled cabling in lineside concrete troughs, from where it could be more conveniently stolen. The LNER platform buildings were gone by commencement of the GN electrics in Autumn 1976. Which makes the 313 units 41 years old about now. I occasionally visualise the equivalent service 41 years prior to 1976. Gresley's A4s were brand new on the prestige services!
