Police warning about "scary clowns' causing distress
« on: October 19, 2016, 06:26:00 pm »
Police say people dressed as “scary clowns” are causing distress in the area. They say there’s been a number of reported incidents across the county in the last week. Officers say in some instances, those dressing up as clowns have no idea of the fear they are causing to others.

Superintendent Richard Liversidge said: “Although the people dressing up as clowns may think they are taking part in harmless fun, they should be mindful of the impact their actions may have on others and be aware that any behaviour that causes another person alarm or distress could lead to them being arrested under the Public Order Act 1986".

Police are say there is no law banning the sale of fancy dress outfits and therefore no action can be taken directly against shops that sell them. Anyone who witnesses or experiences an incident which has / or is causing harassment, alarm or distress should call Hertfordshire Constabulary on 101.
