Blue Houses, Delfom(?) North Mimms
« on: August 17, 2016, 10:24:01 pm »
Hi,

I'm attempting some family history research, and have traced my Hutchings ancestors back to the early 19th Century.

They lived in North Mimms (as it was then spelt), in somewhere called Delfom. Would anyone happen to have any information about Delfom? Is it a Parish or suburb within North Mimms?

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

Regards, Rich Hutchings

Hi Rich,

Delfom is actually Dellsome. Dellsome Lane connected Welham Green and Colney Heath before it was bisected by the Barnet Bypass later the A1M.

Roestock is an area within Colney Heath and is part in Colney Heath Parish in the District of St Albans and part in the Parish of North Mymms in the district of Welwyn/Hatfield.

The cottages are still there and are located by the crossroads of Bullens Green Lane and Dellsome Lane and are shown on the 1924 OS Map below.

The Bluehouse cottages are also still there and are the next row of little terraced cottages to the north along Bullens Green Lane.

The census enumerator was obviously walking in a northerly direction.

You will probably be interested in this article on Roestock that contains a reference to Anne Hutchings living at 64 Roestock Lane in the 1871 census.

Hi Rich,

The 1897 OS Map below, which is the next one north in the series, shows Bluehouse Cottages at the very bottom of Bullens Green Lane.

We know the enumerator was walking in a northwards direction so your ancestors lived in the second cottage along from the right (with the hedge) in the Google image below.

Thats absolutely fascinating. Thankyou very much indeed! I think a trip to North Mymms is in order in the very near future.

Rich
