New Forum
« on: February 27, 2005, 09:38:36 am »
We've replaced the old forum with a new, faster version, which includes many more features. A few minor changes still need to be made, but you should be able to use the new forum. If anyone has any problems with the new format please email the site by clicking here.

I think it's great!
Only query is whether we can give yourselves good Karma?

Apparently not - oh well I shall just have to use it as a tool to give bad Karma to supporters of a particular football team prior to big matches...

I've noticed that with the old forum I was showing as a member online as soon as I hit the site's front page, but that with the new forum I don't seem to appear on front page top left as a member online unless/until I've visited a forum discussion page. Has anyone else noticed this?

And another thing...

Call me an old stick-in-the-mud but this default centralised layout of text strikes me as a retrograde step.  For Go(o)d(nesse)'s sake, we're British!

Bring back default Left Justification.  Bring it back now.

Otherwise I think everything's super.

Hi ADM,

I agree, it is horrible and I am trying to figure it out. I want it to be left aligned, and it is in Mozilla Firefox, but, for some reason, IE makes every post centrally justified (which looks bad).

If any coders out there are willing to help by taking a look at the code it would be great. Please message me through the forum if you think you would be able to spot the error that is making Internet Explorer do this and I will mail you the code.

always willing to lend a hand - but any reason to move to FireFox  should be welcomed. A far better browser than I.E.

I know some people are very anti-IE and in many cases pro other browsers, especially Firefox and Opera, but the fact remains that any public site should work correctly with IE.

I have been involved with supporting PC's and Windows based environments (amongst other things) for many years and have a pragmatic approach when trying to fix problems. It's really unimportant whether it works better with Firefox or not, the simple fact is that the vast majority of users will be using IE.

Possibly Firefox adheres to standards better, perhaps it performs slightly better, maybe it's more secure (although quite a few security holes have been found with Firefox) - but so what ? IE is the standard (albeit de facto) that stuff has to work with.

So rather than knocking anything written or developed by Microsoft let's have some sensible suggestions as to how the forum code can be made to work with IE.

BTW, I have no affiliation or symathy to Microsoft or anyone else, I just want things to work. I really don't care how my car engine works, nor my television or central heating boiler. I just want them to work properly, all of the time.

Unfortunately I don't have any programming skills to write home about (I'm assuming it's perl or similar) so I cannot offer any assistance personally, however if necessary I may be able to enlist the help of some work colleagues if no one else can help. Let me know.

Well if you want me to be constructive...

The answer is to change the doctype declaration

From

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

to

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">

This works when I extract the HTML and load it into IE

Right folks, stand by for an hour of chaos. I am about to attempt to fix this. You will still be able to post while I faff about with the code, but the shape, colour, style, and size of the forum will change from time to time. Don't worry, I have created a back up, just in case it all goes pear shape - and no data will be lost.

I think we are almost there. The forum is now left aligned in both browsers, but it is now going to go across 100% of the screen.

There are also stats at the top, which you can make disappear if you want by clicking on this button .

If you want the stats to reappear simply click on this button . We are now working on changing the title at the top to the normal title with a link back to the front page.

The new stats bar, which you can make disappear if you don't like it, (see above) now displays two functions which people might find useful. After you have logged on, one shows all unread posts since your last visit and the other shows all new replies to threads you have posted in.

This is great Dave, really good - it keeps getting better and better - the unread posts feature is very useful!

Thanks Aidan, think we will leave well enough alone now. I was hoping you'd read the note about it changing shape and colour before logging on -- otherwise you might have blamed the Stella.  ;)

Bring back default Left Justification.  Bring it back now.

I think it is now sorted ADM. Thanks for raising it.
