OWL message: info on Council Tax rebate fraud
« on: October 20, 2015, 08:55:54 pm »
OWL reports that fraudsters have been phoning victims telling them that they have been placed in the wrong council tax bracket for a number of years and are entitled to a rebate. They normally say that the rebate should be about 7000. When the victim is convinced, the fraudster tells them that in order to receive the rebate, they will need to pay an upfront admin fee - typically 60 - 350. The victim provides the details and makes the payment, then hears nothing more and cannot contact the person they originally spoke to on the phone. When the victim rings the council about the rebate and the wrong  council tax bracket, the council knows nothing about it.

Protect yourself:
  • Never respond to unsolicited phone calls
  • Your local council won't ever phone to discuss a council tax rebate - if you receive a call of this nature, put the phone down straight away
  • No legitimate organisation will ask you to pay an advance fee in order to receive money, so never give your card details
  • If you think you've been a victim of fraud, hang up the phone and wait 5 minutes to clear the line as fraudsters often keep the line open. The call your bank or card issuer to report the fraud. Where possible, to be safe, use a different phone line to make the call.
