Mighty Men of Mymms Showcase
« on: October 26, 2014, 12:25:46 pm »
St Mary's Church, North Mymms, will host an exhibition on Sunday 9th and Saturday 15th November 2.00pm - 4.30pm, to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the starts of World War I. This unique exhibition pays tribute to the 59 men of Mymms who left their homes locally, never to return. Complimentary tea, coffee and cake will be available, with any contributions going to the Royal British Legion. The display has been created by local resident Mike Allen who will be on hand during the above times to answer any questions and provide information.

Hi Ephiphany, thanks for sharing that link. What an amazing piece of work it is. Each name in the list links to a pdf with a story about the man named. Apparently it took two years to put together. I was going to try to embed the pdfs here, but they were so big that it slowed the site down. If anyone is interested in knowing more just go to the http://www.welhamgreen.org/mighty-men-of-mymms page, click on one of the names and you will be taken through to the pdf. Here is the first to show how much hard work has gone into this project.

I have figured out a partial solution by making the pdfs into jpgs, compressing and resizing and adding them below, but the pdf versions on http://www.welhamgreen.org/mighty-men-of-mymms (click on the name to reveal them) are much better. I think the team at http://www.welhamgreen.org has done an excellent job in producing such a valuable record of local history.

Mike at www.welhamgreen.org has updated his presentation of the Mighty Men Of Mymms with a gallery of pages featuring a short bio of each man. If you click on the picture you can get a larger version and then click again for the full size. There is also a link to the high-quality versions in pdf format. Mike is hoping any relatives will get in touch if they have any info to add.

It's amazing that 100 years on, stories and pictures of these brave men are available for anyone to see - they were from an age where radio broadcasting was in it's infancy and TV had yet to be invented - in fact most of the homes these men lived in would probably not even had electricity, the thought of instant global communication via the WWW couldn't even have been imagined in their lifetimes.

Well done for publishing these stories

Agreed, and some look so young, and the stories of what they did and who they left behind are so sad. Congratulations to Mike Allen at the Welham Green site for two years hard work. A great community venture which will be appreciated by so many.

Really fantastic exhibition, fascinating stories. I enjoyed it immensely, thank you Mike and all concerned for all the hard work that went into putting on such a wonderful display. If anyone didn't get there today, do make sure you see it next Saturday, you won't be disappointed.

I also attended on Saturday and totally agree! The exhibition is a real labour of love, with an enormous attention to detail - including images and information about the POW camp at Marshmoor.

The icing on the cake WAS the homemade cakes - absolutely delicious!! :)

Don't forget that next Saturday afternoon will be your last chance to see this fascinating display before it is dismantled.
