Hide email address
« on: November 29, 2004, 11:58:26 am »
Did you know that you can hide your email addresses from your forum user profiles.  I recommend all forum users do this to avoid spammers.

Simply log on, then click on your user name.

Click on << Modify >>

Then check the box that says 'Hide email from public?'

And finally click 'change profile' at the bottom of the same page.

Here's a way to fight back against spammers:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4051553.stm

It's a screen server than makes requests of sites that use spam. The idea is that it pushes up the cost of hosting the site and makes it run slower.

Not sure if I'll use it, but would like to know if anyone else does.

A reminder to all new members, please use the hide your email option in your forum user profiles -- it helps prevent spammers from picking up your address.

Simply click on 'profile' from the options in the forum banner.  When in your 'profile' check the 'Hide Email from public' box near the bottom and then click 'change profile'.

I will do a few myself for those who might not log on in the near future. We don't want to help the spammers.

By the way, if you are worried about people not being able to contact you, they still can through the forum internal messaging system.

You can also set that up to alert you, by email, everytime someone sends you an internal message.

To do this you have to do the following.

Click on 'messages' in the line below the banner that says something like.

"Welcome back xxxx, you have xx messages."

By clicking on the word 'messages' you arrive at your message inbox.

Now click on the word 'preferences' at the top, near an icon of a hammer and a screwdriver.

You will then arrive at a page where you can choose to be notified by email when you are sent an internal message.  Click on 'yes' and then click on 'Save Preferences.'

A mail will be sent to the email address your registered for the forum with whenever someone sends you an internal message via the forum.

Another reminder to try to protect forum users from spammers. Please do not type your email address online -- it could leave you open to spam. Instead you can invite people to send you a personal message through the forum.

This can be done in two ways. People can click on the email icon or the instant message icon (user online), or (user offline). both are found under your profile name to the left of your post.

You can set your profile so that when someone sends you an instant message you will notification via email. Please explore your profile options by clicking on your user name. There are some useful settings there, some new since we upgraded to this new Simple Machines forum. One is particularly useful, it creates a small 'you have a new message' pop up when you are reading the forum and someone messages you via the internal system. Just go to your profile and click on 'show a popup when you receive a new message'. You might want to consider checking the notify option by email option 'every time you receive a personal message'.  A message will be directed to the email address you used when registering for the forum.

We do our best with this site to reduce the opportunities for spammers.

This is a repeat of an earlier post. I've noticed a number of new members have not elected to check the 'Hide email address from public? when they registered. If you forgot, or failed to see the option, it is not too late. Simply follow the instructions below.

By the way, if you are worried about people not being able to contact you, they still can through the forum internal messaging system or by clicking on the email button under your profile name to the left of every post you make.

A forum user has pointed out that I was wrong when I said, in another thread, that hiding an email address protected the owner of the address from spammers. Apparently it doesn't.

If you want to be safe, don't post email addresses on the site. The best way for people to contact each other via email is to click on the email icon under the person's profile.

You can also contact people by clicking on the instant message icon which is blue if they are online or grey , if they are currently offline.

You can also set your instant messages to go through to your mail box. Simply log on, click on profile , click on 'personal message options', check the box that says 'Notify by email every time you receive a personal message' and then click 'change profile'. Then, when anyone sends you a message via the forum, you will get an email notification too.

Sorry for the confusion.

Just to clarify for new users.

When you log on, you will see the small email envelope icon under your name ( ), even if you have chosen to hide your email from the public.

Don't worry, no other users can see it, just you.
