Refuse collection strike Thur 10 July 2014
« on: July 03, 2014, 06:36:30 pm »
Most will probably have received a notice about the refuse and recycling strike on July 10, but, in case you missed it here it is below.

It's about pay.

http://www.theguardian.com/society/2014/jul/02/coalition-government-public-sector-strikes-10-july

Quote
"Unison has claimed pay freezes and below-inflation pay rises had reduced local government workers' pay by 20% since the coalition came to power in 2010."

By my calculations, using these rates no pay rise since 2010 would result in a cut of about 16% and as there have been "below inflation" rises it would be less of a cut then that. Still, never let the figures get in the way of a good sound bite.

Thanks for heads up David as I haven't received this, however slightly confused by the guidance as my Collection next Thursday (date affected) is my brown (food/garden) & blue (recycling).  The following week (17th) will be the solo black landfill bin!!  :icon_scratch:

The same with us. Next week, strike day, is our recycling day. I wonder if, when they say "we recommend that you put food waste in either your refuse bin or brown bin for collection on July 17" they mean that there will be an added brown bin collection on that day? I agree, it's not clear, is it.

The point made later on in the document that states that "no overflowing bins, excess recycling or garden waste will be collected" could be interpreted to mean that the brown bins will be dealt with on the 17th but only if they are full of food waste and not garden waste, but I might be reading it incorrectly.

The amount of food stuff that goes in my brown bin is minimal - mostly tea bags, orange peel and egg shells so doesn't take up much space in there.  It's mostly hedge cuttings and grass cuttings!

From the Welhat website today:
UPDATE 9 July: We now plan to collect all bins scheduled for a Thursday collection on Friday 11 July.  We plan to collect all bins scheduled for a Friday collection on Saturday 12 July.
However, in case of any problems with these revised collections, please follow the advice as below:
If you are scheduled for a collection on either Thursday 10 July or Friday 11 July, put your bins out as usual and keep them out until Saturday 12 July.  If your bins are not collected by the end of Saturday 12 July, you will need to bring them back in and present them for your next scheduled collection (i.e. two weeks later).

A big thanks to our refuse collectors who managed to fit in an extra collection today and empty the recycling bins. I was dreading having ours hanging around another two weeks. Thanks guys, you do a great job. It's appreciated.

Probably would have been better if they had collected it yesterday.

No, by being a day late they'll get overtime rate for working Saturday.

Perhaps I should have said better for the people who have no choice but to pay whatever the council decides to charge for this service.

Better that than have to cart your waste to the dump!

They got paid, probably at weekend rates of pay, to clean up the problem they created by refusing to do their jobs on Thursday. Hardly a matter for thanks. Seems to be more like thanking someone for giving me money when their actually paying a court imposed crime - except in this case it's us paying the money to them.
