The part in article that may be of interest:

Quote
In addition, Govia will order a new fleet of 108 carriages for the Gatwick Express service, replacing the current 25-year-old trains with a fleet better suited to the needs of airport passengers. It will also secure 150 new carriages to replace the 40-year-old trains currently operating on the route between Moorgate, north London and Hertfordshire.

Yeppie, about time  ;D

I have always wondered when they would replace the Moorgate trains, they have been looking a bit tired for a while now....

The article implies it's not just Thameslink but the GN (Great Northern) franchise as well. I'm assuming this means our line (it used to be WAGN which was West Anglia Great Northern) - if so and it leads to better services from BP

I can see a lot of money being spent on rebranding all the stations and infrastructure though.

I have always wondered when they would replace the Moorgate trains, they have been looking a bit tired for a while now....

They seem pretty sound to me, just lacking the TLC which would keep them habitable - other operators who use the same bodyshell have managed to maintain, enhance even, the passenger environment. Even the newer 365 units are a bit scruffy inside these days, but remain a good advertisement for BR's workshops, being the last and probably best to emerge from BR's York carriage works. I'll miss them when they are elbowed out by the imported units.

I associate the tiredness you mention with FCC rather than the stock itself, but it's probably too late in the day for the new regime to take much interest in improving them. Ironic that the new operator is part-owned by the French equivalent of BR!

By the time they're replaced, the 313s will have notched up over 40 years service.  Which is about the same as the old GNR/LNER Quad-Art sets managed.

I wonder if this means the fence down the platform, which is about 10% too short and never has the gates locked, will never be completed.

Some interesting developments on this page...

Looks like Moorgate will be getting a service later in the evening and at the weekend from end of next year

The new trains will be air conditioned

Quoted as 4 off peak trains per hour on the 'stopping' line - I understand that will be 2 to moorgate and 2 going down the Thameslink Spine to Caterham - direct services from Brookmans Park and Welham Green

Unsure what is happening with regards to Peak time services but I think we will be loosing some trains to Moorgate, but with more services overall, however potentially going via St Pancras instead.

James, will the Thameslink trains to Caterham be going through Kings Cross?  Or St Pancras?  If so, it will be much better not to have to change at Finsbury Park.  Do you have any idea when this may begin, please?

St Pancras then down the Thameslink 'core' to South London. Starts in 2018.

For those following Twitter updates for local train services, the old @FirstCC account is now out of service and a new account for @GNRailUK has been set up for people to follow from today (the tweet below was written yesterday).

Unfortunately, the related website change from one provider to the other means that our much-used links on the front page to check on the latest train information for Brookmans Park and Welham Green no longer work.

I was going to point the link at the new Great Northern page that, I presume, is meant to replicate the FCC service, but got pages without any information (screen grabs attached). Not much good.

I have tweeted them this page to see if they respond and tell us which page to link to for live updates. Hopefully they will get back with the information before tomorrow's rush hour.

My Virgin Trains app on my phone seems to be working fine.

A really useful app, not just for Virgin but any rail service in the country.

Thanks Sasquartch, yes I have apps that work, too. I was more concerned about the page to link to from the site to help local commuters who have been using that service.

I think the webpage is probably working fine. There are no trains serving Brookmans Park at the moment - it's a replacement bus service!

Thanks James, that's what Brad said in a tweet. However, in the past, the page would show that buses were running. We just need the new company to replicate that format and all will be fine. Here is what Brad wrote.

Was just walking up Oaklands Avenue and saw a full sized coach trying to turn the tight corner into Westland Drive. Turns out it was a rail replacement bus that was a bit very lost. I know it's a very new franchise, but am hoping that the train drivers don't have a similar problem tomorrow ;)

Good to see they have fixed the live departure arrivals page. I was impressed by the way Brad @GNRailUK responded to the tweet I sent out highlighting the problem. The two links on the front page of our site now work. I have chosen to link to the departures option rather than the arrivals option because I figured that people would be more interested in what time a train left both Brookmans Park and Welham Green for either WGC or FP. Note: The image below is just a screen grab, and, because it's just a picture, the links on it won't work.

Making comparisons after a few hours is unfair in my humble opinion. Let's give them 12 months and then see if anything has changed for the better or worse...

They look like trains, they run on the same track and they go to the same destinations. At some points they'll still look like trains running on the same track to the same destinations, but they'll have a whole new colour schema. As James said, ask again in a year.

I seem to recall it was only a few months ago that all the stations were rebranded in First Capital Connect corporate colours. No doubt we will be getting a further rebranding from the new lot soon. All paid for by the travellers of course.

Lets hope this new lot are capable of running a train on time.

I can't remember the last time I got a train from Potters Bar that wasn't late, several years at least (I'm not joking), weekends being particularly bad.

It's now three months since Great Northern @GNRailUK took over the franchise for the local train services. Any early impressions regarding reliability and punctuality?

No obvious improvements or problems yet - still too early to tell I think, although they do at the moment seem to be having a few issues with not having enough drivers.

The only thing which I have noticed is that Govia didn't bother with the much trumpeted 'leaf fall timetable' that plagued us every Autumn and doesn't seem to have suffered at all as a result!
