I have an old laptop that I am looking to offload, and my computer expertise are very limited. Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

1) What is the best way for me to clear all personal data from the laptop?

2) What is the best way to dispose of the laptop? Has anyone used one of those laptop recycling sites?

Thanks in advance

We use a team in Watford who refurbish and supply to schools, charities etc. They used to collect individual items, but more recently with petrol prices so high  they prefer it if there are several items.  If you have friends and family who have stuff to get rid of it is worth collecting them in one place.  They seem genuine/ethical and they cross format disks with Xs and Os.

website is www.recycle-computers.co.uk - Eric is the contact.

Remove the hard disk and either keep safe somewhere or destroy with a hammer. Only sure way.

The reality is that unless the laptop is less than 3-4 years old and can run Windows 7 it is probably unusable - schools do not one obsolete kit any more than a charity would.

best thing to do is take drive out and bend all the pins off it then crack the circuit board with a screw driver.

i am happy to offer you cash for the unit-with or without drive. Please PM me if interested

thanks bp
