PC remote server - safe to use?
« on: January 23, 2012, 07:57:55 pm »
Hi All,

Am thinking of using PC Remote Server to enable my Windows Phone to act as a remote control.  Have downloaded the app, but it's asking me to install software on my PC.

Does anyone use this app/product and is it secure / safe / trustworthy?

Thanks all,
Aidan

I don't know about this app but I am naturally suspicious about such things and just wouldn't do it, there are other ways :)

I use RDP (aka Terminal Server Client) for remote access to a PC at home, a custom port on the WAN side somewhere between 81-32768 is sufficiently obscure to be awkward to scan for. Then re-map this port to 3389 on the LAN side. For more security you could restrict the permissible addresses allowed to connect from the WAN side, and for confidence just log every connect attempt.

In the past I have run an SSH server, then connect to this, then tunnel RDP over it. That works well if you can get a client that runs SSH, which sadly the iPad won't do (without jailbreak).

I don't know Windows Phone so much but I'm sure RDP would be in there somewhere.

Thanks Slimgym, I'm always a bit suspicious too, so will investigate your suggestion.
