Why has my mobile internet speed died?
« on: January 18, 2011, 07:33:23 pm »
I use a desk top computer on a mobile vehicle, connected to a mobile Vodafone connection.  Although it tells me it has found a 3G or 3G+ connection the download speed is about 728 kbps - it used to be 4000? kbps.  I work in various parts of Hertfordshire and this has only just started happening.

Any ideas?

On a slightly different tack I am intrigued by the fact that mobile reception is notoriously bad in my house in Moffats Lane.  I obtain the best reception with Vodafone in the corner of the back ground floor room and in bed.  I get 3 to 4 bars up on the reception but no 3G which I find strange.

O2 and Orange/T mobile appear to be rubbish though they work well at my son's in Biggleswade.

Are you on PAYG or a monthly contract?
What speed do you connect at? (not the download speed)

Check out the earlier thread http://www.brookmans.com/forum/index.php/topic,2679.msg21935.html#msg21935

The nearest tower to BP village is next to the scout hut. This is used by a variety of operators supporting various services.

Basically, 3G services are available there from O2, Orange and 3. It's likely that 3G services from T-Mobile or Vodafone will be a lot less reliable / fast as they would be serviced by another, more distant tower.

Always worth checking reception before commiting to a network if you specifically need 3G services in a particular location, voice may appear to work fine with a strong signal but actually only working in 2G (GSM) mode rather than 3G (UMTS)

I also cannot get 3G converage in Brookmans Park on my work Vodafone dongle.  It works fine at 3G+ down at Waterend.  There is another mast down there near the carwash/bus garage.  ON Vodafone's own coverage maps, BP seems to be in a  small service balckspot for Vodafone.  All others seem fine though.

That makes sense as Vodafone does not support 3G from the tower next to the scout hut.

Frustrating  :'(

I'm PAYG. It's set up to receive 3G but doesn't I seem to be on 2G.  Oddly enough though I don't get anything like the reception on O2, Orange or 3 that I do on Vodafone in spite of the position of the aerial in BP/WG
