Forum upgrade including a few important changes
« on: December 05, 2010, 07:51:29 pm »
Hi all,

We have upgraded the forum to the latest version of the free, open-source forum software provided by Simple Machines.

The main reason for the upgrade is to try to defeat the spammers; we get about half a dozen trying to sign up each day. The new upgrade should make it harder for them to register.

The other improvement is that we can now add social networking features that will enable people to Facebook-like and tweet discussions they like.

At the moment we have lost the nice Brookmans Park Newsletter colour scheme because that was a hand-built template and we are currently using the default, which is not that bad, really.

Anyway, sorry for the downtime today (Sunday). I hope all works well over the next few days. We will keep an eye on it.

And finally, thanks to James for hours of work behind the scene to make it all happen.

The Facebook-like button is nice. The Facebook profile avatars of those who like a thread show up - you have to be logged on to Facebook to see them on this forum. Nice touch.

Had me worried for a minute or two.  I thought that somehow I had the wrong website.  Now to explore the new features.  I am always amazed at the amount of effort that you and James put into this website and forum.  The organisation is beyond me.  Thank you both.

I have added two links back to the front page of the Brookmans Park Newsletter to the top of the new forum page.

You will find them in the two 'news' areas - top right just under the search box and immediately above the main index.

Thanks to the anonymous user who mailed the site about the changes. Unfortunately they didn't add a return address. However, I will attempt to answer the question, which was...

Thanks for the link on the forum page back to the home page, but can it not open a new window.
Also I cannot see a link at the top of the forum page back to home page. Only the one on the right.

Internet explorer 7 user

The link on the forum page to the home page does open a new browser window. Were you requesting that it didn't?

Regarding the second link. That is visible when you are on the index page.

I have been investigating this.  For those interested, the links on this forum are created with what is called BBcode. Those links will either open in a new page or replace the page you are viewing depending on your browser settings.

Please notice that the link opens in the same window or a new window depending on the users browser preferences.

So, if you don't want to open a new browser when clicking the link please check your browser for the setting that makes links open in a new window. In Firefox, for example, go to Tools/Options/Tabs and uncheck the top box which offers the 'open in a new window' option.

If anyone is familiar with how to change this setting in Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and Safari, please add details below.

Thanks

David

In Explorer, Tools - Internet Options - General - Tabs - Settings.  At the bottom of the page - "Open links from other programmes in"  and there is the choice of "A new window", "A new tab in the current window", or "The current tab or window".

If this is ok, it's a first for me to answer a question instead of asking it  ;D
