Kingfishers in Gobions
« on: January 24, 2004, 10:46:14 pm »
I was wondering if anybody else had noticed a severe lack of Kingfishers in Gobions Wood this winter? Last year (2002-3) we saw them every single visit from about November to March, flying, perching and on one occasion swooping down and catching a fish and flying off with it across its beak. But this year, nothing. Could it be that the long dry summer has driven them off to another roosting area?

Alf,
Kingfishers are definitely still around. I saw one on Jan 1st near the footbridge.
Kingfishers tend to wander in winter - you may bump into one anywhere along the small stream between Gobions and the North Mymms pumping station.

Thanks for the information, we'd better walk a bit further this weekend!

During a fantastic walk in Gobionís Winter Wonderland with my family we spotted a kingfisher. This one was up the stream near the brick arch. Stunning colours against the white snow, but I couldnít get close enough to get a picture.
