Changes to schools admission rules
« on: December 30, 2009, 07:08:36 am »
According to a report on The Comet 24, Herts is moving from 'shortest route by road' to 'as the crow flies' for schools admissions and parents are being asked for their views.

Parents' views sought on changes to school admissions rules in Hertfordshire
PARENTS are being asked for their views on proposed changes to school admissions rules in Hertfordshire. Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) will launch a consultation on changes in arrangements for 2011/12 on January 4. The council proposes to move from the 'shortest route by road' method of measuring home to school distances to an 'as the crow flies' straight line. HCC is asking for feedback from parents, carers, schools and community groups on this proposal.

Would this be measured from the school gate or from the boundary nearest your house?

Like many things, it sounds simple in theory but not in practice.

As the crow flies make sense if we are encourage parents to walk to school.

By road makes sense if we encourage parents to drive.

I followed the links above but I can't find where I can give my opinion to Herts council on this issue.

Would anybody care to put forward the case of - "by road" - against - "as the crows flies".

If seven of the nine surrounding local authorities use this approach, then its a pretty foregone conclusion that the same will apply here. I believe this is merely just a pre-implementation exercise [for the sake of allowing people "a say"] prior to changing the system anyway - regardless of what a "consultation" will come up with.
