The ticket machine has been vandalised and has police tape round it.

Thanks for the heads up, Angel. It might be worth those who have smartphones taking a picture of the machine, especially if you are travelling when the ticket office is closed and you can't get a valid permit to travel. You might need the evidence. See the highlighted section in the screen grab below taken from the First Capital Connect page on travelling without a valid ticket.

And this from the pdf on penalty fares embedded below.

I did take a photo of it before I travelled yesterday.
 :)

On my way home, saw someone official taking pictures, he said he thought it would be fixed on Tuesday.

Why not upload it. Pictures (with a caption) are always better than words.

Wonder if CCTV picked anything up, there are a few cameras around the ticket office.

I'd imagine a few thousand pounds worth of damage that one way or another commuters will end up paying for.

that looks like a break in to nick the coins rather than vandalism for the sake of it. :(

Can't see why the screen's broken as well if that's the case

There's a new screen today but not working yet.

The past few weeks, the screen has been filthy so one good thing to come out of this I suppose!

this damage got me thinking (anything to keep me from doing the accounts!!)

I think its a shame suburban stations are unmanned, but i guess its cheaper for the rail companies to repair damage like this than employ staff to stop it.

I wonder what the figures are for losses through vandalism vs employing a staff member.

Looking at the state of that machine the repair has to run into the low thousands-new lcd/coin mech/repair to fascia.

still cheaper than employing 24 hour staff though

just a thought

In this day and age why not just accept credit / debit card payments only ?

With no cash to steal perhaps less damage ?

For people without credit cards a free ticket 'permit to travel' could be issued which would prove where someone got on - then they could pay at the other end, assuming that station was manned.

Yes, potential for fare dodging perhaps but would have to be weighed up against the cost of constantly replacing broken machines.

In this age of smart phones with NFC or QR codes, why any need for a ticket at all? An app where I can buy a ticket (daily, season etc) on my phone and store it on my phone would be enough. Nothing to vandalise. Tickets could be bought on line and printed off as QR codes.

For people without a phone or internet access they could also pay when they arrive at a larger station.

I think it would be too tempting fo people to claim they don't have a smartphone and just pay at the other end IF asked - reality is that many stations, eg Potters Bar at 8pm, are unmanned and people would simply travel without paying.

I think there needs to be something to prove where you boarded a train.

What about having stations staffed and ticket offices open longer hours to improve customer service and safety?

My personal view is that it wouldn't be cost effective at stations like ours.  Even Potters Bar have very few staff at times.

The ticket machine could have been trashed in the middle of the night when there wouldn't be staff around anyway.

When I wrote the post up top I knew a neo-Luddite would post that they didn't have a smart phone, but if you read what I wrote again you'll see I said " Tickets could be bought on line and printed off as QR codes. " Which will deal with people who don't have access to a smart phone. And "For people without a phone or internet access they could also pay when they arrive at a larger station." which is the same as sasquartch's comment. Yes, people would dodge the fare, but they do today too. I often can't buy my monthly ticket at the office, because it isn't open nor at the ticket machine because it doesn't sell monthly tickets. Therefore I pay at Moorgate. So it isn't that different, except there's no machine to replace every time it's smashed and it's more convenient.

I don't want my fares rising to pay for extra staff most people seldom, if ever, need and disappear at the first sign of trouble.

Is 'Neo Luddite ' meant as a compliment? I certainly consider it one.

I think it's someone who rejects all new technology.

As I sit here typing on my iPad, I don't really think it applies to me just because I choose not to have a smartphone!!

When I came back from work this evening, I noticed that the machine is working now but not taking cash at the moment.

Some helpful person has jammed up the coin exit shoot of the machine. I wouldn't pay with cash unless you have exact change....

I just went down there to have a look, whatever that gunky stuff is, it's also in the tray thing at Welham Green Station.

I would imagine the plan is someone puts it in, waits for lots of coins to get stuck in it and then returns a day or so later to collect their free cash...

It seems to be happening in other places too (this was in April in Surrey)

A word to the wise - new train timetable today. Some trains have changed their times by a couple of minutes, particularly services in the evening peak. Suggest you check before travelling!

when it pulls out at 6.34 and 32 seconds leaving people running down the stairs and scrambling to get on the train or missing it entirely.
Since last Friday, every day the 06.35 has pulled out early, and that time in the morning its a big issue.
I actually believed that trains were not allowed to depart earlier than their scheduled departure time and this morning pushed me over the edge so i noted the departure times and the actual time the train departed from the station using the first capital connect station boards.
Station                     Departure Time  Scheduled Departure time
Brookmans Park        06.34.32              06.35
Potters Bar                06.37.42              06.38
New Barnet                06.44.15              06.45
Oakleigh Park           06.46.10              06.47

etc etc, just very annoying having to sprint for a train every morning especially that early.
This has only happened since last friday so i believe it must be a driver issue, or if this is not the case the reschedule the train timetable!

I have complained about this before, and been told that 'extensive staff retraining' will take place (or similar)

You can use the Real Train Times website to back up any correspondence you have - e.g. this morning's train (which is shown as departing early) can be found at

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/G73711/2014/06/05/advanced

I am not defending the early closing of doors, but it has ever been thus. I have just had a quick look at the time table and it says that doors may close up to 30 seconds before departure. If I had guessed I would have thought it would say 20 seconds. I mainly travel on Thameslink these days and trains can be off and running a few seconds early there too!
