Directory Enquiries
« on: June 16, 2003, 04:13:13 pm »
No doubt everyone will have seen the TV ads. advertising the new directory enquiry numbers all starting with 118.  The BT offering is 118 500 then there is 118 118 and 11 88 88 (and no doubt others).

Be warned however, when you ask for a number they will find it and confirm the type of business or address if private and then ask if you would like to be connected.  If you say yes they will connect you, without giving you the number, at an inflated cost per minute.  BT is 30p per minute 118 118 is 9p and 11 88 88 is 20p per minute.  Only BT announce to you before connecting you that the call will cost you 30p per minute.  So in the case of the two non BT providers, although the cost of the enquiry service is cheaper, if you allow them to connect you will pay more landline to landline than you would for many mobile calls.

So make sure you have your pen and paper handy and dial it yourself at an average cost for a local call of 4p per minute.

You might be better paying a visit to and clicking on their directory enquiries link, cos that's completely free!
